In we had 5 students again try and all 5 received top awards. This puts our average to date at percent awards, which is unheard of. In early March, Arlington students joined just under , students nationally and worldwide to take the National Latin Exam. This exam tests students on Latin vocabulary and grammar, Roman culture, history, and mythology. Here is a year-in-review look at their achievements. They joined 1, other Latin and Greek students from all over Virginia for a two-day extravaganza of academic, oratorical, literary, costume, and art competitions. They also attended lectures and demonstrations on classical topics, and enjoyed a banquet, disco, karaoke, and a talent show.

Arlington students earned 75 top five awards on their convention tests and projects. These state officers are responsible for organizing state-wide events such as convention and certamen, and supporting Latin clubs throughout Virginia. APS Latin students competed in six certamen competitions this year, hosted by St. Stephens and St. This year, over Latin students from every APS middle and high school, many bringing friends and family, celebrated Agonalia, an ancient Roman new year festival. They enjoyed a potluck banquet, Roman games, gladiatorial combat, arts and crafts, and fortune telling.

The awards are centered around the national average score for the exam level. Cum Laude certificates are given to students who score points above average. Magna Cum Laude certificates go to students who score points above average. Silver medals and a Maxima Cum Laude certificate go to students points above average. The Intermediate Latin Reading Comprehension and Advanced Latin Reading Comprehension exams contain two Latin passages one prose and one poetry as the basis for questions on grammar, comprehension, historical background, classical literature, and literary devices. Teachers now have greater flexibility to offer exams at the level appropriate to the abilities of their students. Teachers should read the syllabus and find the exam which most closely resembles what has been taught by the teacher so far that year in the classroom.

National Winners

The philosophy of the National Latin Exam is predicated on providing every Latin student the opportunity to experience a sense of personal accomplishment and success in his or her study of the Latin language and culture. This opportunity exists for all students since, in the National Latin Exam, they are not competing with their fellow students on a comparative basis, but are evaluated solely on their own performance on the exam. The basic purposes of the NLE are to promote the study of Latin and to encourage the individual student. This is distributed to all secondary schools in the United States each September.

The time limit for taking the exams is 45 minutes. If the demographic information has been completed before the day of the exam, the time limit is 40 minutes. The test administrator should try to seat students of the same level apart from one another. No make-up exams are allowed after the fact.
